On this entertainment wall unit the space from the floor to where the TV sits is approximately 27 inches.

Is this wall unit made of wood or composites/fiberboard?

It is made out of Italian Melamine.

It states that the space can fit a 50 inch flat TV. Is it at all possible to accommodate a 51 inch television?

Since most newer flat TV's are measured diagonally, a 51 inch TV is usually not that wide however we always recommend that our customers compare the actual dimensions of the particular television they already have or are interested in purchasing against the TV cavity dimensions for the wall unit they are considering to ensure a proper fit.
