Closet System Measuring Instructions
Measuring for your new furniture doesn't have to be stressful. Just follow the instructions below to get some measurements, and we'll take it from there. If you're getting custom work to fit a space, your measurements don't have to be perfect, as we'll leave a couple of inches on each side.
Basic Measuring Steps
1. Gather Your Tools
- Measuring tape
- Paper and pencil (or use the notes app on your phone)
- A friend or family member to help (optional, but makes the job easier)
2. Measure the Space
- Height: If you're planning a piece that goes near the ceiling, measure from floor to ceiling. If you have crown molding, measure to the bottom of the molding.
- Width: Measure the width of the wall or space at floor level, mid-height, and near the ceiling. Use the smallest number if there's a difference.
- Depth: Measure how far the furniture can extend from the wall without causing obstruction.
3. Note Important Features
Make note of any elements that might affect your furniture placement:
- Windows and their height from the floor
- Doors and their swing direction
- Electrical outlets and light switches
- Vents or radiators
- Baseboards or moldings
- Sloped ceilings or other architectural features
Pro Tips for Accurate Measurements
- Measure in multiple places since not all walls are perfectly straight (despite appearing so).
- When there's molding, measure from the molding, not the wall.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to get extremely precise measurements?
No! We design our custom pieces to leave some room for adjustment. Measurements within an inch or so are perfectly fine. We always leave a couple of inches of leeway from each wall. With a standard unit, please be sure to do the same—if you have 40" of space, choose something no larger than 36" wide (to leave 2" on each side).
How much space should I leave for doors to open?
For hinged doors, allow at least 16" of clearance from the front of the wardrobe for comfortable access.
How high should my wardrobe be?
This depends on your ceiling height and preferences. Standard wardrobe heights are typically 72" to 84.25", but custom heights are available. Storage toppers can add an extra 14", 22", or 34" to extend your storage to the ceiling.
What if I'm not sure about something?
Don't worry! Our design experts are available to help you through each step of the process. When in doubt, take a photo of the space and we can provide guidance.
Remember, measuring for furniture doesn't have to be stressful. Approximate measurements are fine, and we're here to help if you have any questions!
