How To Spring Clean and Bring The Season Into Your Space

White and sunlight - the perfect spring comboWith Easter behind us and my allergies attacking with a vengeance, I can say in no uncertain terms, spring is here.  So why not spruce up the house for the spring season with a few easy tips like the ones below:

Rearrange furniture.  Your furniture arrangement dictates the flow of space & movement in your home, so rearrange the layout to ensure that you and your guests are a) near light, b) facing the outdoors and c) comfortably reminded of the joys of the season.

To supplement your new furniture arrangement, keep curtains open wide and clean off the windows to let your house reach its maximum sunlight potential.

All this sunlight can get hot, so use whites to reflect the sunlight and liven up the room without letting it get too warm.  White fabrics, furniture, flowers and other accents are all fun, simple ways to bring the lighthearted youth of spring into your home on a budget.

Special tip: Also consider using mirrors or mirrored furniture to help spread the sunshine around your house.

In addition to white, greens and emeralds are great spring colors.  They match the budding trees and plant life.

Finally, become friends with woven baskets and accessories.  Spring is an outdoor season, so let the outdoors in with woven accessories made from hay or wicker.

How are you bringing the spring season into your home?  Do you have any special ideas or designs for April and May?

Allergies: Scourge of the Spring

Allergies: scourge of the springSpring sprang early this year, and with it that seasonal scourge of allergies.  If you’re going to be allergy-prone this season, try out these tips below to keep your home allergy proof and help stop the sneezes.

Keep your windows closed overnight.   The highest outdoor pollen counts usually occur between 4am and 10am.  While it may be tempting to let the cool night air in while you sleep, giving the pollen allergens all night to attack your system will leave you sneezing in the morning – not a pleasant way to start the day.

Also, consider switching to a lighter fabric for your drapes or curtains.  Open windows, even during the daytime, can let allergens in and heavy draperies will catch them.  At very least, try to purchase washable drapes.

Invest in a strong vacuum with a HEPA filter.  A HEPA filter will trap smaller particles, like allergens, much better than a standard vacuum filter.

If allergies are a real problem in your home use as little carpeting as possible.  Hardwood/tile floors are easier to clean, and won’t trap dust and pollen like carpets or rugs.  If you must have carpeting, try to vacuum at least once a week.

Follow these tips and your home should be allergy proof to some extent, but bear in mind, fully allergy-proofing your home would require you to pretty much live in a bubble.  Do you know of any other ways to help keep allergens out of your home?

Think Pink

Pink is a dynamic, versatile color that can bring out a wide range of moods in a room.As warm weather moves in on the back of a fresh spring breeze, moods are changing and with those moods, the colors of the season.  Although interior designers are forecasting emerald and orange as the go-to colors this spring, pink never goes out of spring style.

But like its big sister red, pink needs to be used properly to retain maximum effect.  Although it has some “saccharine sweet girly girl associations,” it’s a very complex color that can glimmer and shine or simmer and burn.  Different mixtures and tones reap different sentiments, dramatically shifting the mood and pop of a space.

When mixed with red, pinks can create a vibrant, romantic dynamic.  However, this is primarily recognized as a Valentine’s Day trick, so you might not want the colors of red hot love swimming around your space year round.

Pink mixed with black however sends a sharp, intelligent signal, perfect for any room where guests typically gather.  Pink with grey or white tones provides a warm, refreshing glow unlike the stark contrast of pink on black.

To really bring the spring into your home, try mixing pink and green.  The rustic combination of two colors naturally found in flowers and plant life will bring a delicate, pastoral air into your home.

Used as either a primary wall color or simply for upholstery and decoration, pink works great as a little “surprise in your design,” says Robin De Groot.  Combined with the fresh scent of spring air and the increase in natural sunlight, pink can revitalize and refresh your space, bringing a ray of sunshine and an air of youth back into your life.

Freshen Your Home with the Scent of Spring

Let the scent of spring fill your homeWhen discussing spring and spring cleaning, we always focus on the organizational advantages of the season.  It’s a time to start anew and get rid of all that old clutter.  However there is one interior design aspect that we almost never talk about come spring, despite the rich opportunities it offers: scent.

Scent is a remarkable sensory perception, especially considering it’s so well-tied to memory.  Think about it.  While you might not be able to recall offhand, certain places have scents associated with them in your memory.  You’d probably instantly recognize the scent of your parents’ house, the scent of your office, the scent of your local swimming pool, or even the scent of your favorite restaurant!

So why not bring the spring smells into your home to help make sure your visitors leave with a pleasant memory?  Flowers, are of course, always an excellent idea considering they look great, but if you don’t feel like taking care of them, leave a few air fresheners with a particularly spring scent hovering around the room.  And as the weather begins to warm up, try leaving the windows open more often to let a bit of that natural fresh spring scent waft in and refresh your home from the stuffy winter months.

Let in the Wild: Using Natural Elements to Brighten Your Home

Let in the outdoorsHere on the East coast, winter is on its last legs, though sometimes it feels like it never got out of bed in the first place.  Nonetheless, with warm weather, we’re all spending a little more time outside and starting to realize how nice it is not to spend the whole day cooped up.  Things like grass, plants, trees, and animals are pretty cool, and it’s a real bummer we have to leave them for a few months each year.

One way of dealing with the loss of outdoor time in the winter months, is to bring the wild inside.  Potted plants, wood carvings, and other outdoor amenities refitted for inside the home add a touch of life to any room.  Likewise, paintings of animals and natural spaces can lighten up the room and even let you feel like there’s a little more space within your four walls.  Add a few candles with natural outdoor scents as well to really capture nature’s magic.
