Sebastian Wall Unit in Black

Black Wall Unit - Sebastian Wall Unit

Here are a couple photos of a recent delivery and setup we did in a customer’s home.

The Sebastian Wall Unit, like all of our entertainment furniture, is available in just about any combination of colors and wood tones imaginable. This one is shown in our exclusive ash matte finish with black fronts.

The flat screen television is of some typical size. You can see in the photo below that this wall unit is equally appropriate for TV’s quite a bit larger or smaller than this one.

Plenty of Storage in the Living Room – Finally!

When looking at the Sebastian, note that each front face conceals some kind of extra storage for your living room or TV room.

At the bottom are large storage drawers, while the left and right sides are tall doors, the full height of the unit, with adjustable shelves inside.

Above the TV are storage spaces with doors that open upward on pneumatic hinges. It’s a nice touch not generally seen on other entertainment furniture.

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber Monday – What Does it all Mean?

Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Cyber MondayWe’ve all heard about Black Friday, the infamous start of the holiday shopping season. But how did we end up with Cyber Monday and Small Business Saturday?

The term Black Friday seems to have actually gotten its start in Philadelphia in the 1960′s, where automotive, pedestrian and indoor traffic caused by huge numbers of shoppers made it a rough day for police officers and cab drivers, who gave the Friday after Thanksgiving the name many know it by today.

Later this relatively negative sounding origin would be softened by the spreading of the idea that accounting practices relating black ink to profits led to the Black Friday moniker, as the profitable holiday shopping season kept retailers “in the black.” However, there appears to be no evidence of this idea surfacing until sometime in the 1980′s.

Recent years have seen the largest retailers gaining the most benefit from the Black Friday craze, as Black Friday Deals from the likes of Best Buy, Target and Wal Mart compete with one another for consumer attention and dollars.

Cyber Monday – A Self Fulfilling Prophecy

Unlike Black Friday, which naturally became a day for many to start their holiday shopping since they had they day off from work, there is evidence that Cyber Monday started out as a creative marketing myth.

A trade association for online retailers invented the term “Cyber Monday” in 2005, in order to “create some consumer excitement.”

The marketing implied that the Monday after Thanksgiving had become remarkable in the amount of online purchases made.

At the time, statistics showed that the Monday after Thanksgiving actually ranked 12th for online spending, not even in the top 1/3 of the 32 day long shopping season.

Admittedly, the campaign turned out to be brilliantly effective in its ability to affect the behavior of consumers, as Cyber Monday 2011 was a record breaker.

Small Business Saturday – A Shopping Day Worth Supporting

Small Business SaturdaySmall Business Saturday is a different kind of effort, for which American Express gets the credit.

Small Business Saturday was officially kicked off in 2010, when American Express used radio, television and social media to successfully gain huge support for a day of “supporting small businesses and all they do for their communities.”

The movement met with continued success for 2011, when AMEX approximates that 103 million Americans shopped at small businesses on Small Business Saturday and generated a 23% increase in AMEX transactions.

Save $25 Shopping on Small Business Saturday

How did this new shopping day get so successful so quickly? By offering rewards for American Express cardholders who shopped at small businesses.

With large national and international retailers grabbing more and more of shoppers’ attention each year with shopping deals and promotions, AMEX decided to go with a proven technique and reward cardholders a $25 credit on statements if they shop at qualifying small businesses on Saturday.

Small business owners across the country have been supportive of and thankful for the initiative, no pun intended.

What Counts as a Small Business for Small Business Saturday?

There’s some fine print (for example, corporate and prepaid cards are ineligible), but some eligibility requirements from the Small Business Saturday Homepage include that an eligible small business must:

  • Be locally owned
  • Have under $10 million annual revenue
  • Not be part of a franchise with over 100 stores
  • Not be a government, nonprofit, political or religious organization
  • Not promote certain products including pharmaceuticals, gambling or firearms

Contempo Space is indeed a qualifying American Express Card accepting small merchant.

This means that a, American Express purchase in-store, by phone or online at contempospace.com will not only support the kind of service and quality that only an American shop with American made products can offer, but you can also save 25 bucks!

Please note that American Express offers only a single $25 credit, not a credit for each purchase. Their terms and conditions are here. We cannot answer specific questions about the American Express offer or negotiate the terms of the offer on a customer’s behalf.

Contempo Space Delights Furniture Customers with Customer Service

With the upcoming High Point Market expected to attract in excess of 80,000 people, furniture is on the minds of many homeowners and designers this time of year.

Furniture Showroom EntranceFurniture manufacturers and retailers across the globe are crunching Q3 numbers and reporting mixed results, as a tepid economy and lukewarm consumer confidence allow only the best in the industry to thrive.

“Contempo Space in a certain way has easier decisions to make than some others in the furniture industry,” says Danielle Mancini, a consumer satisfaction specialist for the company.

While bix box stores and international brands attempt to maximize profits with traditional methods such as negotiating furniture pricing with suppliers, offering a varying quality of furniture, adjusting wholesale/retail pricing or possibly managing large advertising and marketing budgets, Mancini says that Contempo Space is in a unique position.

Custom Furniture Means More Choices

“Since we’re a custom manufacturer selling directly to our customers, our advantage is that we can offer our visitors an unparalleled level of service.

“A customer walking into a typical furniture store has a certain number of pieces to choose from. A common issue we hear about is that there’s something for sale that’s close to what the customer had in mind, but for a purchase like furniture it’s going to be around for a long time. The customer is going to be happier if they can get exactly what they want instead of feeling like they had to make some kind of compromise.”

Listening Closely to Customers

Mancini adds that they have this insight because of their close interaction with customers.

“Many customers just need a little tweak to a certain piece of furniture, and they tell us about their space and we can do that for them since we make all the furniture ourselves. When it’s a whole room or a whole home, there’s a lot of conversation that happens with the customers and we get to know each other quite well. Even the customers who buy directly online are offered a feedback survey so they can let us know how we’re doing.”

With only a few dozen employees, it’s relatively easy to get everybody together and discuss what customers appreciate the most as well as any new customer challenges that might be able to solved through innovative design.

Build Furniture that People Want and Need

Contempo Space cites mirrored wardrobes, extra tall wardrobe packages and low profile entertainment centers as examples of furniture designs that they have created in response to customer feedback. The most recent addition to the lineup is a full line of custom closets, which was designed in response to customers who expressed desires to make better use of existing closet space.

Moving forward into what is typically the busiest time of year for retail, the people at Contempo Space will continue rely on the strength of their reputation for high quality furniture, flexibility and customer satisfaction to steer customers into the showroom and their accompanying site www.contempospace.com where furniture can be customized online.

Mirrored Wardrobe Closet Makes Room Look Larger

Mirrored Wardrobe Closet

Mirrored wardrobe closets have some kind of magic to them. It’s a simple magic really. We’ve shown this before with a 2 door wardrobe closet, here’s the effect with a 4 door wardrobe.

Without making structural changes to existing walls or closets, huge amounts of hanging and drawer storage can be gained with any wardrobe closet. That’s enough to make anybody feel all warm and fuzzy inside.

The simple addition of mirrored doors then enhances that by making the room look twice as deep as it did before!

Enjoy a couple photos of this illusion in action:

Above, you see the closet with all doors opened. It’s a wall with a freestanding closet in front of it. It’s certainly more useful than a wall with nothing in front of it.

Below, you see essentially the same space. This time the closed mirror doors make it look as though the room continues all the way through, even though we are still looking toward the same wall.

It’s a neat trick of light that makes any size room feel more open and inviting.

Any wardrobe closet from our collections can be ordered with mirrored doors and drawers.

Just so you know.  :)

Online Furniture Shopping at Contempo Space

The site now displays a greater variety of Contempo’s original American made furniture designs, and uses photography to show more of the available finishes and sizes for wardrobes in the bedroom furniture category, as well wall units and entertainment centers in the living room furniture category.

New pieces of Modern and transitional furniture were also added to other sections of the site. Platform beds, headboards, nightstands, dressers, desks and more can now be browsed, searched and shopped.

Dress Up Your Furniture

At Contempo Space, we offer custom design options to make a piece that’s fit to be absolutely you. But you can actually take it a few steps further.

There’s no reason that the custom process needs to stop with us.  There are a myriad of things you could do to your furniture as well, to help create a custom look that can
change with seasons, events, or just how you’re feeling.

First and foremost, remember that we are not talking about modifying your furniture.  Leave the tools in the shed unless you’re either a.) really handy or b.) OK with voiding
the warranty.

What we’re talking about here is using simple things like flowers, curtains, sheets, pottery, and other little accents to give your furniture a little more jazz.

For example, try draping a blanket or embroidered sheet over a chair (as seen above) or on top of a TV Stand.

Or, considering the wide array of storage options on Contempo Wall Entertainment Centers, there’s plenty of room for little decorative options such as framed pictures, potted plants, artwork and other small pieces.

Decals and stickers can be tacky, but for children’s furniture they can really help brighten up the room and add a little theme.  Imagine for example how some of
these awesome decals might look on your child’s freestanding wardrobe.

Find Your Style with Custom Furniture

Find your styleStyle is more than just a word.  It’s a concept that encompasses everything having to do with a person’s outward exertion of their personality, their habits, their hobbies and pretty much everything that makes them unique.

We try to wrap the word ‘style’ in limits by categorizing it – haute, contemporary, traditional, modern, colonial – but the truth of what style actually is goes far beyond anything that our limited vocabulary might be able to explain away.

Style is also something functional.  Good style works for you.  Style shouldn’t be difficult or inconvenient, and it shouldn’t be predetermined by a label.   It should instead be simply natural, flowing with grace and ease like it was never even considered.

That’s why ultimately style has to be custom.  And that’s what we offer, custom style made just for you.  Your style might not be in a showroom – and that’s okay.  Because we’re here to make furniture with a custom style created just for you.

At Contempo Space we build freestanding and built-in modern furniture, tailored to the style and the lifestyle of every individual who places an order with us.  With our wide variety of finish and storage options, we’ll work with you to make sure your home furniture is exactly you.

You have to find your style.  Contempo Space will help show you the way.

Be Honest With Yourself

Interior Design Tip: When You Redesign, Start with the Furniture Layout

When you plan a redesign, start with the furniture layoutIt’s a plain fact that your home will go through a couple of redesigns.  It’s human nature.  As we grow and change, our relationship with our surroundings does as well.  It’s necessary that our surroundings shift to reflect our growth as people, both mentally and physically.

When you decide it’s time for a total home makeover, start with the furniture layout.  Although it might be an afterthought in daily life, furniture is a remarkably important piece of the home design puzzle.    Furniture shapes and dictates the function of a room.  A room with an entertainment center is obviously a room for watching movies or TV.  A room with a sofa is obviously for sitting and relaxing.  And the style of the furniture will act as an indicator of the style of your home and guide the rest of your interior design.

The legendary modern architect Frank Lloyd Wright, aka the most important American architect in history, would design custom furniture for his interiors.  And that was the only furniture he would allow in his homes.  While you probably don’t have that luxury, you can at least plan accordingly, and set up a furniture layout that can guide and complement your new interior design scheme.
